Prayer Is More Than Asking for Stuff

Sometimes when we pray, we can get confused and start thinking prayer is just about asking God for things we want. But prayer is deeper than that. The mindset we should have about God’s blessings is not like a kid in a candy store, where we just grab whatever we feel like. We don’t get everything we desire just because we said a prayer. As we grow closer to Jesus Christ, our prayers should start changing too. We begin to want what God wants, and our hearts slowly line up with His heart.

In Mark 11:24 (NLT), Jesus said, “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” That verse does not mean we can ask for anything selfish and expect God to hand it over. God cares more about changing our hearts than just giving us stuff. When we are walking with Him and trusting Him, our prayers start to reflect the heart of Christ, and this is what He means.

This verse in Mark 11:24 is about us trusting the Father, and Him trusting us ask with a heart that wants to please Him.

John 15:1-2 (NLT) says, “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.”

This verse is showing how close we need to stay close to Jesus Christ by loving, trusting, and following His example. Just like a branch cannot live or grow on its own, we also cannot grow spiritually without staying close to Jesus. God is the One who shapes us, corrects us, and helps us grow into who we are supposed to be.

So, when we reach out to God, our hearts should be to follow His Will. We should also be learning how to be faithful with the blessings He already gave us. And if we are unsure about God’s Will, we can pray and ask Him to help us understand it. We can also read the scriptures more, and as we do, the Father will help us understand Him better.

Prayer is humble communication with God. It’s a privilege that He gives us. It’s our way to staying close to Him through Jesus Christ. If we are not loving Him and following Him, then our prayers might start to be only about what we want instead of what God is doing in our hearts and minds.

So overall, prayer is not just about asking God for things and hoping we get everything we want. It’s about staying close to Jesus Christ and letting Him shape our hearts. As we grow in Him, our prayers start to sound different because our desires start to change. We begin to care more about God’s Will than just our own plans. And when our hearts line up with His, we start to pray in a way that reflects who Jesus is. These are the kinds of prayers that please God, and they also bring peace to us too.
